Melon
AROUND THE WORLD, YEAR-ROUND
Melons have been a speciality at Staay for a long time. In the late 1980s, the eldest son of founder Willem van der Staay, Ad, had already started growing watermelons in Spain. Since then, our own cultivation has moved to our Costa Rica facilities and we have a complete, year-round product range with supplies from Costa Rica, Spain and Brazil. Innovations have resulted in better shelf life, fewer seeds, smaller sizes, and more flavour.
Base product range:
- Watermelon
- Galia melon
- Cantaloupe
- Yellow honey dew (YHD)
- Piel de Sapo melon

Frequently asked questions
When is a melon ripe?
When the melon has a nice smell, you can consider it ripe.
How long can you store melons?
It depends on the variety and origin, but two to three weeks is a reasonable guideline if you keep the melon cool.
What is the best way to store melons?
In a cool, dark place, like basically all fruits and vegetables.
Do melons continue to ripen at home?
Yes, a melon ripens when you store it at room temperature.
Why are there still actually seeds in a seedless watermelon?
A seedless watermelon has no hard dark seeds. However, there are always small white seeds left in the melon. Because you can eat these virtually unnoticed, these melons are sold as seedless.
